국문 설명

봉암사 지증대사탑 鳳巖寺 智證大師塔 보물 경상북도 문경시 가은읍 원북리 485 이 탑에는 봉암사를 처음 건립한 지증대사(智證大師, 824~882)의 사리가 모셔져 있다. 팔각원당형(八角圓堂形)의 이 탑은 신라 헌덕왕(憲德王) 8년(882)에 세워졌으며, 여러 장의 판석(板石)으로 짜여진 방형의 지대석 위에 각부의 장식 조각이 섬세하고 수려하게 제작되어 신라 사리탑의 대표적인 작품이다. 탑의 높이는 3.41m, 지대석 너비 2.28m의 당당한 탑이다. 지증대사는 경주김씨로 17세에 부석사(浮石寺) 경의율사로부터 구족계를 받고 승려가 되었다. 헌강왕(憲康王) 7년(881)에 왕사로 임명되었으나 사양하고 봉암사로 들어와 이듬해인 동왕 8년(882)에 세상을 떠났다. 헌강왕은 대사의 시호를 지증, 탑호는 적조라 내렸다.

영문 설명

Monk Stupa of Buddhist Priest Jijeung of Bongamsa Temple Treasure 485 Wonbuk-ri, Gaeun-eup, Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do This stupa enshrines the sariras of Priest Jijeungdaesa (824~882), the founder of Bongamsa temple. Built in 882 (the 8th year of King Heongang's reign), the pagoda features an octagonal roof and a rectangular platform made of several flat stone pieces and exquisitely inscribed ornaments. It is typical of the sarira pagodas made during the Silla Period. Overall, it is an impressive, imposing figure standing 3.41m tall (width of the platform stone: 2.28m). Jijeung, a member of the Gyeongju Kim Clan, became a Buddhist monk at the age of 17. In 881 (the 7th year of King Heongang's reign), the King appointed him as a royal priest, but he declined the position and moved to Bongamsa where he passed away the following year. King Heongang anointed him Jijeung and named the pagoda for his sarira Jeokjo.
