원앙은 우리나라와 중국, 소련, 우수리, 일본, 대만 등지에 분포한다. 암컷·수컷이 항상 함께 다닌다고 하여, 화목하고 늘 동반하는 부부를 빗대어 원앙이라고 한다.

원앙의 몸길이는 보통 43㎝정도이다. 수컷이 매우 아름다운데, 눈 둘레는 흰색, 뒷머리깃과 윗가슴은 밤색, 등은 청록색을 띠고, 가슴에 2개의 세로줄무늬가 있다. 또 노란 옆구리와 위로 올라간 선명한 오렌지색의 부채형 날개깃을 가지고 있다. 암컷은 몸 전체가 갈색을 띤 회색이며, 흰 점무늬가 있다. 배는 흰색을 띤다.

삼림이 울창한 산골짜기 계곡에서 생활하는데 겨울에는 저수지, 호수와 늪, 해변, 냇가에서 무리로 겨울을 난다. 주로 활엽수 나무구멍에서 번식하는데, 오리류 중 중국의 호사비오리와 같이 나무구멍에 번식하는 유일한 종이다. 한 배에 7∼12개의 엷은 황갈색 알을 낳고, 28∼30일이면 부화된다. 풀씨, 나무열매, 달팽이류, 민물고기 등을 먹는다.

원앙은 세계적으로 20,000∼30,000여 마리 밖에 남아있지 않은 새일 뿐만 아니라, 그 모습이 매우 아름다워 우리의 선조들로부터 사랑을 받아온 진귀한 새이므로 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.

The male and the female of Mandarin Duck stay together. Therefore, we call a friendly married couple Mandarin Duck. Found in China, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea, the Mandarin Duck is about 43cm long. The male is very beautiful; it is white around its eyes, and its head and upper chest are reddish brown. Its back and chest are dark green with vertical bands and it has clear, orange, fan-shaped feathers. On the other hand, the female is brown-grey with white spots and its belly is white. The Mandarin Duck lives in a thick forest and in groups in reservoirs, lakes, swamps, seashores, and streams in winter. The Scaly-sided Merganser in China and Mandarin Duck breed in the hole of a broad-leaved tree. This bird lays 7-12 light yellow-brown eggs that hatch in 28-30 days. It eats grass, seeds, fruits, snails, and freshwater fish and especially enjoys acorns. Since the Mandarin Duck is very beautiful and has been preserved well by our ancestors, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.

鸳鸯分布在我国与中国、俄罗斯、乌苏里、日本和台湾等地，雌雄永相伴，所以常称和睦常相伴的夫妇为鸳鸯。全世界只剩下两万∼三万多只鸳鸯，鸳鸯相貌美丽，是长期以来受人我国先祖喜爱的珍稀鸟类，现因此被指定为天然纪念物，受国家保护。

オシドリは韓国・中国・ロシア・ウスリー地方・日本・台湾などに分布している。雌雄がいつも一緒に行動することから仲のよい夫婦の象徴として扱われている。オシドリは世界的に20,000〜30,000余羽しか残っていない鳥であり、その姿が美しいため昔の人たちから愛されてきた貴重な鳥であり、天然記念物に指定、保護されている。
