These documents and materials were handed down from generation to generation of the head family of Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607), whose pen-name was Seoae. Ryu Seong-ryong was a government official during the mid-Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). He was also a follower of Yi Hwang and studied together with Kim Seong-il.He passed the civil servant examination in 1566 and was appointed to many important posts (such as third, second, and chief state councilor, Minister of Personnel, etc.). In this capacity, he realized that the Japanese army would attack Joseon and hence appointed the Admiral Yi Sun-sin and General Gwon Yul to prepare for war. He also dedicated himself to beefing up the country’s military strength by commissioning the manufacture of weaponry such as cannons and the construction of fortified walls.
