국문 설명
목포 경동성당 국가 등록문화재 제764호 목포 경동성당은 목포 일대 도서 지역의 선교 활동을 위해 1954년에 설립한 성당이다. 아일랜드 '성 골롬반 외방 선교회' 의 지원을 받아 설립하였으며, 목포 지역에 남아있는 가장 오래된 성당이다. 목포 산정동 성당과 더불어 '레지오마리애의 한국 발상지로, 한국 천주교의 성지이다. 1953년 5월 31일에 레지오마리애 '죄인의 의탁' 쁘레시디움*을 창립하여 단원과 어려운 가정을 방문하는 등 선교 활동에 앞장섰다. 이후 '천신의 모후’(1957. 9. 14)와 '인자하신 동정녀'(1957. 11.17)를 창단하여 초·중·고등학생이 중심이 된 활동을 활발하게 펼쳤다. 또한 한국 전쟁으로 발생한 수많은 전쟁고아를 돌보기 위해 유치원을 설립하여 사회 복지와 교육 활동을 시작하였다. 1965년에 지반 침하로 본당 건물과 전면부 종탑 부분에 균열이 생겨 해체한 후에 현재의 모습으로 개축하였는데, 전면부를 제외한 나머지는 건립 당시의 모습을 그대로 유지하고 있다. 경동 성당은 당시 지역 사회를 대표하는 건축물로 종교사적 측면에서나 지역사적 측면에서 높은 가치를 지니고 있다. *레지오마리애 : 가톨릭교회의 평신도 신앙 공동체로서 교회 복지에 유익하다고 판단되는 모든 형태의 사회봉사와 가톨릭 활동을 전개한 조직 ** 쁘레시디움 : 레지오 마리애의 조직 중 하나로 가장 작고 기초적인 단위 조직체

Mokpo Gyeongdong Cathedral National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 764 Mokpo Gyeongdong Cathedral was established in 1954 for missionary work in the island area of Mokpo. It was founded with the support of the 'St. Golomban Foreign Missionary Society' in Ireland and is the oldest remaining cathedral in Mokpo. Along with the cathedral in Sanjeong-dong, Mokpo, it is the birthplace of 'Legion of Mary and is the sacred place of Korean Catholicism. On May 31, 1953, it founded the Legion of Mary'Sinners' Surrender' Presidium and took the lead in missionary work, including visiting members and families in need. Afterwards, it founded the 'Mother of Heaven'Sep.14,1957 and "Generous Virgin Mary"Nov.17, 1957 to actively engage in activities centered on elementary, middle and high school students, In addition, it established a kindergarten to take care of the numerous war orphans caused by the Korean War, and started social welfare and educational activities. In 1965, the main building and the bell tower at the front of the building developed cracks due to the ground sinking, and the building was disassembled and rebuilt to its current state. Except for the front part, the remainder of the building keeps the original appearance. Gyeongdong Cathedral was a representative structure of the local community at that time and is of high value both in religious history and in the local community.
