국문 설명
목포 갓바위 木浦 갓바위 천연기념물 제500호 목포 갓바위 명칭은 삿갓*을 쓰고 있는 암석 모습에서 유래되었다. 이러한 모습은 약 8천만년전 화산활동에 따른 화산재가 굳어진 응회암이 파도에 따른 충격과 함께 바닷물과 염분이 암석 모양을 변화시킨 결과이다. 삿갓 모양 아래쪽 움푹 패인 부분은 끊임없는 파도와 염분에 의해 부서져 구멍이 생기게 되었고 이로 인해 패인 공간은 그늘로 인해 항시 젖어있는 상태에서 더욱 쉽게 부서지면서 확대 되었다. 삿갓 모양의 윗부분은 파도와 바닷물에 의해 암석에서 분해된 광물 성분 중 일부 풍화**에 강한 광물들이 떠밀려 윗부분에 자리 잡게 되었다. 이후 상부는 반복해서 햇볕에 마르게 되고 딱딱해지면서 현재의 삿갓모양을 형성하였다. 따라서 목포 갓바위는 파도와 염분 그리고 햇볕 등이 복합적으로 만들어낸 결과로 암석이 지질학적으로 변해 가는 과정을 잘 보여주고 있다. 또한, 갓바위에는 슬픈 이야기가 전해지고 있다. 먼 옛날 소금을 팔며 병든 아버지를 모시던 젊은이가 약 값을 벌기 위해 집을 떠났다가 돌아와 보니 아버지가 돌아가신 것을 알게 되었다. 젊은이는 슬픔과 후회하는 마음으로 갓을 쓰고 고개를 숙인 채 이곳에서 자리를 지키다가 아버지와 아들 모두가 바위로 남게 되었다고 한다. *삿갓 : 갈대 등을 엮어서 우산과 비슷한 모양으로 만든 모자의 한 형태 **풍화 : 암석이 물, 공기, 햇빛 등에 의해 점차 부서지거나 분해된 현상
영문 설명
Gatbawi Sea Cliff and Tafoni, Mokpo Natural monument No. 500 Gatbawi in Mokpo was named after a rock figure that looks like wearing a Satgat. This rock figure is the result of seawater and salt changing the shape of the volcanic ash-turned tuff created by volcanic activity about 80 million years ago, along with the impact of waves. The dent in the bottom of the Satgat shape was broken by constant waves and salts, resulting in a hole, which expanded further as it broke more easily since it was always wet by the shade. The top part of the Satgat shape was formed by some of the mineral components decomposed from the rock by waves and seawater, which were resistant to weathering, being pushed up to the top.Since then, the upper part has repeatedly dried and hardened in the sun, forming the current shape of Satgat. Therefore, Gatbawi in Mokpo illustrates the process in which a rock changes geologically as a result of a combination of waves, salts, and sunlight, etc. Also, Gatbawi has a sad story. Long long time ago, a young man who used to take care of his sick father by selling salt left home to make money for medicine, and when he came back, he found his father dead. It is said that the young man remained motionless here with his head wearing Satgat bowed with sorrow and regret. Eventually, both father and son turned into rocks.
