Namdaemun
Gate (Great South Gate), originally called "Sungneymun",
was the front gate of the wall surrounding the capital
city, Hanyang (now Seoul).
The construction of the gate began in the fourth
year of King Taejo of Joseon Period (1395) and was
completed in his seventh year (1398). But it is
known that the gate was rebuilt in the 29th year
of King Sejong (1447). Also, there was a major construction
on the gate in the tenth year of King Seongjong
(1479) according to the record found in the renovation
in 1961-1963.
This is the oldest wooden structure remaining in
Seoul. Rainbow-shaped Hongyemun gate is located
in the center of the stonewall, and a two-storied
pavilion with five compartments on the front and
two compartments at the sides was constructed on
the top of the gate.
It originally had a hip-and-gable roof shaped like
the Chinese character of 'ø¢' but it was reworked
into a hipped roof. Pillars, supporting the roof,
are not only placed on the columns but also in between
the columns. The well-structured construction is
a good model of the early Joseon Period.
According to the record of "Jibongyuseol",
Prince Yangnyeong has personally written down the
calligraphy "Sungnyemun", the name of
the gate, on the hanging board.
This is one of the worthy wooden architecture showing
its firm construction technology with accurate year
of its first construction. |
