Introduction of Museum
Vivid museum, open museum.
Sungkyunkwan University Museum collects, excavates and exhibits the cultural assets of Korea covering various areas including the Confucian culture of the Joseon Era, anthology, and history. To fulfill its purpose, the university opened the museum on the fifth floor of then central library on June 22, 1964. The museum moved to the 12th floor of the second faculty hall (named Hoam Hall) in the liberal arts/social science campus in June 1979. The museum was then again moved to the 600 th -Anniversary Building built to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the university in 2000. The museum is a modern institution with a 40-year history and advanced technology systems in the exhibition halls in some 16,000 m2 of space.
The artifacts kept by the museum include remains illustrating the life styles in the Joseon Era such as stationeries, letters, furniture and accessories of scholars. The museum has also collected artifacts in different areas ranging from stone swords of the new stone age and earthenware from the bronze age to the folklore articles and artworks from the pre-modern and modern eras. Since 1969, the museum has been continuously conducting surveys and collecting rubbed copies of inscribed characters throughout the country. The surveys have yielded about 670 rubbed copies, and the copies are valuable resource in the research of inscribed characters in Korea.
 
Introduction to Exhibition Halls
University History Hall
The hall exhibits the 600 year history of Sungkyunkwan University with artifacts and display panels. The university's history is separated into 4 periods, Founding/Early Years (1398 ~ 1946), Establishment (1946 ~ 1965), Progress & Development (1965 ~ 1981) and Rapid Advancement (1981 ~ 1999).
Confucian Culture Hall
The hall exhibits the life of a scholar in chronological order from birth to death through stationeries and accessories illustrating the typical lives and life styles of scholars in the Joseon Era.
Husband's room
Reproduction of the husband's room of the house of Euiseong Kim's family. The room was built with traditional architecture without using nails, and the grace of a scholar's room is restored with the actual artifacts.
Wife's room
Reproduction of a wife's room of the Euiseong Kim's family. The room is simple in design and decorated with pieces of traditional furniture.
Hall of writings, paintings and rubbed copies
The hall exhibits paintings, maps, writings and rubbed copies from the Joseon Era.
Hall of porcelains
The hall exhibits the artifacts from the periods prior to the Goryeo Era. The exhibited stoneware, bronze ware, ironware, roof tiles, bronze mirrors, celadon, punchung porcelain and white celadon are categorized according to their shape, pattern and application.
Hall of musical instruments for memorial services of Confucius shrine
The hall exhibits large musical instruments and photographs illustrating musical performances. The musical instruments were used for the memorial services of Confucius in the spring and autumn at Sungkyungkwan.
Special exhibition hall
The spacious hall of approximately 330 m2 allows the museum to hold various exhibitions in diverse styles. The museum has successfully exhibited eight special exhibitions starting with the ¡®Exhibition of Humans and Nature' in 2001.
 
Representative Relics
Geunmuk
Age: Joseon Era
Size: 52.6 cm wide, and 31.5 cm long
Geunmuk is the title of a hardcover book containing simple writings such as letters from 1136 intellectuals edited by Se-Chang Oh (aka Wichang: 1864 ? 1953). ¡®Geunum' stands for the writings on the hill of the Sharon roses, the flower of Korea. The artifact contains writings by various persons including Mong-Ju Jeong of the Goryeo Era and Do-Yeong Lee of the Korea Empire era, and covers a period of 600 years.
The artifact is important in the studies of the fonts and brushing styles in Korea, because the collection contains very diversified fonts and brushing styles of different writers of various status and occupations. All of the five writing styles are contained, and the content of the writing show diversity. The letters provide insight into the lives of the people over a period that covers 600 years, and are valuable for studying changes and patterns of signatures in the letters of the Joseon Era.
 
Certificate of worthy retainer for foundation of
the Joseon Dynasty

Designated cultural asset: Treasure No. 1076
The Certificate of Merit for founding of the Joseon Dynasty issued to Cheon-Ri Kim was designated Treasure No. 1076 in 1991. In 1395, the individuals who played an important role in the establishment of the Joseon Dynasty (1392, the first year of King Taejo's reign) were bestowed with an honorary title and given a Certificate of Merit, and later other posthumous, secondary Certificates of Merit were awarded to individuals who have contributed to the country.
This certificate was issued to Cheon-Ri Kim, the vice-governor of Miljik, in September 1395, and recorded in the ledger of the Certificates of Merit. There are two types of certificates: King's message and Certificate of Merit. It was a common practice for the king's messages to be given as primary Certificates of Merit, and the printed certificates to be issued as secondary Certificates of Merit. This certificate contains 680 handwritten names of individuals who were awarded the Certificate of Merit and description of the reasons for their selection.

Visiting the Museum
The museum performs exhibitions, academic activities and education for the students as well as the community residents, and invites you to visit the museum (free admission).
For groups, please first apply for a group visit on the homepage of the museum, then call the liberal arts office at the museum (phone: 760-1321). It is recommended that teachers or adults accompany minors.
Photographing or replicating the artifacts require the approval of the curator.
