HanBat Museum of Education
 
Introduction
Hanbat Museum of Education is the sanctuary of education, history, and culture established in the oldest school building in Daejeon, Korea.

Hanbat Museum of Education is a museum exclusively designed for education where you can take a look at the entire education from the traditional education to the modern education, and it exhibits the textbooks from the schools such as Seodang, Hyanggyo, and Seonggyungwan in the premodern times, new textbooks during the modernization, the textbook under the Japanese rule that Japanese imperialists forced students to study, and today's textbooks.

The exhibition includes the study materials that reflect the effort of students who did their best to study even under the toughest days of the nation such as the premodern times and after the liberation that you can feel the high fever for education among Korean people. You can also understand the spirit and wisdom of ancestors easily through the reconstructions of old education facilities and a variety of folk relics.

Hanbat Museum of Education is a school building completed in June 8, 1938, and it is the oldest building in Daejeon. It was used as school building without even single rebuilding, and the UN force and also the North Korean army stationed here during the Korean War that it also shows the modern history of national tragedy through the traces of bullets. The building is designated as the Daejeon Metropolitan City Cultural Assets Data No. 50.

Guk Min So Hak Dok Bon
Description: Korean Language Textbook

This is a Korean language textbook edited and published by the Textbook Bureau in 1896. The major contents of the book asked people to be awakened through new education to achieve autonomous independence and insisted on the introduction of new and advanced culture by giving importance to the introduction to Korea's traditional culture along with new culture and the culture of various countries around the world. The words were not spaced, the sentences were not punctuated, and it used a lot of Chinese characters. It also used brackets for names of foreigners, foreign places, and the lineage of kings. Sentences are relatively long. It is the first modern national textbook issued during the modernization period of Korea.

 
Gyo Gwa Dong Guk Yeok Sa
Description: Elementary School Korean History Textbook

This is the national history textbook for elementary school issued in 1899 covering from the founding father of Korean nation to Goryeo period.

According to the preface written by Lee, Gyu-hwan, this Korean history textbook was derived from the middle school history book, <Summarized History of Korea> which is written in Chinese, and was written in Korean and Chinese characters, and they originally planned to cover up to the Joseon period, but actually covered up to only the Goryeo period. It is arranged in a chronological order, and the period up to the beginning of the Goryeo Dynasty is summarized into the first volume and the middle years and the last years of the Goryeo Dynasty are described in the second volume. The chronology shows the title of kings, last names, first names, education, mother, the years of reign, age, and empress or queen.


 
 
Bu Yu Dok Seup
Description: Textbook for Children and Women

This is the textbook for children and women written in Chinese. The content is about the patriotism and autonomous independence of the nation. It also introduces the rights and duties of women in the West to suggest a direction for the women then. Unlike other textbooks written in Chinese, it has unique structure as it served as Chinese character learning material as well as Korean textbook.

 
Dae Han Ji Ji
Description: Middle School Geography Textbook

This is the middle school geography textbook issued in 1899. The text is written in Chinese and notes are added in Korean. It explains the precipitousness, evenness, and population of the regions and shows the administrative division of the entire land of Korea to prevent the loss of land due to ignorance. The legend shows the definition of natural geographic terms such as paddy and field, desert, plateau, bay, and straits. The outline briefly describes the location, breadth, coast, topography, geological features, climate, local products, borders, custom, history, political structure, and district division. The section for each province summaries the location, topography, history, mountain ranges, estuaries, bays, islands, scenic sites, the location of offices, directions, households, size of paddy fields, and natural products.

 
Hwang Guk Sin Min Seo Sa Seok
Description: Stone of the Monument for the Oath of the Subjects of Emperor

This is one of the foundation stones used by Japanese imperialists in erecting Hwang Guk Sin Min Seo Sa Bi (Monument for the Oath of the Subjects of Emperor) in the Second Okcheon Simsang Public Elementary School (currently, Okcheon Jukhyang Elementary School) in Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea on August 1, 1940. Japanese imperialists forced students to write 'I am the subject of great Japanese empire', 'I will be loyal to the emperor with my body and soul', and 'I will become a great and strong citizen by training myself' which are the contents of the 'Oath of the Subjects of Emperor' in order to cram students' minds with colonial ideology.

 
Yu Nyeon Pil Dok
Description: Elementary School Textbook
This is the textbook for elementary school children to teach the history of Korea. The purpose of this book is to establish the traditional identity of the race centering of the inspiration of patriotism through education on history and geography and to educate the nation to become independent in the international competition by learning about the new international relationships. The contents include the history and geography of Korea and introduces, explains, and summarizes the international relationships. The book tried to inspire patriotism and awaken the spirit of independence through the achievements of heroes and heroines and asked people to repent over the wrong doings of the nation by reflecting on unfortunate historical experiences. It emphasizes the modern ideology of a nation; people are the owner of the nation and the rise and fall of the nation depend on people. The book also includes the map and illustrations to help the students to understand the contents and the first volume contains the world map and the second volume, the map of Korea. The Japanese imperialists banned the book in May 1909 for being anti-Japanese and nationalistic and published to inspire autonomy, independence, and patriotism.
 
Yu Nyeon Pil Dok Seok Eui
Description: Teacher's Edition of Elementary School Textbook

This is the guideline for teachers for the elementary school textbook ¡¶Yu Nyeon Pil Dok¡· and this is designed for efficient education and it contains the references for the teacher.

¡¶Yu Nyeon Pil Dok Seok Eui¡·is composed of 2 volumes, and the first volume covers up to the 3rd volume of Yu Nyeon Pil Dok. The preface regrets that the foreign country oriented education caused the collapse of Joseon and insists on nationalistic education to inspire patriotism and the spirit of autonomy and independence. It does not contain all contents of the textbook. The book emphasized the inspiration of patriotism, autonomy, independence, and patriotic ideology by including the achievements of heroes and heroines, unfortunate historical experience, patriotic songs.

 
Gyeo Ul Gong Bu Yong Jeon Si Bu Dok Bon
Description: Wartime Textbook for Winter Term

This is the text book for educating anti-communism and the reasons for unification. Ministry of Education issued this textbook to cope with the educational situation during the Korean War where there were lack of textbooks. The contents emphasize that children shall understand the reasons for the war and anti-communism and shall fully participate in supporting the war. The country name or the name of places were underlined and the book contains pictures and illustrations to help understanding.

 
Sin Jeong Jung Deung Man Guk Ji Ji
Description: Middle School Geography Textbook

This is a middle school geography textbook issued in 1910. Each continent was explained by the name, location, territory, coast, topography, climate, natural products, border, language, religion, education, national polity, political structure, and national literature. The names of foreign places were written in Korean, Chinese, and English to give the closest idea of the original pronunciation.

 
Jeon Si Saeng Hwal
Description: Wartime Textbook

Ministry of Education issued this textbook to cope with the wartime situation where there were not enough textbooks. The contents emphasize the reasons for the anti-communism and unification. It has the world map as well as the names of each country in the beginning of the book, and the four subjects are made up of the maps of each country and explanations. Names and proper nouns are underlined.
